Newark School of Violin Making
RAB Oberlin Award: funding to attend the Oberlin Violin Makers workshop in 2020
RAB Award 2019: work placement with Philip Ihle
Education Services Award 2019: funding for sharpening stones and tools.
Marios has purchased the tools with the Education Services award and responded:
“Thank you and the Rab Trust Team for the tools award and the workshop placement. Really kind and generous.
I have just received my tools, some of the tools that I needed were out of stock but I have ordered some others:
New scraper blank 0.6mm. Useful for scraping the ribs, arching and hollowing.
New knife single bevel for several uses.
New fishtail skew chisel for reaching the end of the peg box for easier cleaning.
New hard 20mm chisel for several uses. Unfortunately is very heavy but it can be useful sometimes.
New small brass plane. Great for archings, ideal for small flat areas, fingerboard shooting.
Two really nice diamond stones, the one extra fine and the other one double sided course and fine. Secure flat sharpening.“
RAB Special Award 2018:
Although still in his second of three years at Newark, Marios impressed the trustees with the high quality of his work as well as his thoughtful, thorough attitude. So we decided to offer him this year’s Special Award of £1000 which he will spend on wood and fittings for the growing number of instruments he is making.
RAB Award 2018: money to buy tools
Marios writes of his award:
First of all many thanks to the RAB Trust for this kind opportunity and the generosity to cover my tools expenses.
I asked for the Herdim assembly clamps for closing the box of a new violin or viola. They are so useful and easy to use. First of all they are made to a highly professional engineered design and with very good quality materials for high resistance AND longer lifetime. The shape and material of the coloured heads is so cleverly made to give the pressure in the fluting of the plate and avoid damaging the edge. Colour helps for faster application and use. Blue ones are concave for the upper and low bouts and red/yellow are convex for the Cs bouts.
The pictures show the process of using them to close the box of my Del Gesu ‘Plowden’ copy.
