Workshops both large and small are invited to offer work experience to students who need to develop their skills in a real-world environment. Placements can be as short as one day, or as long as a fortnight, and can offer making, repairing, bow work. The trustees make efforts to place students where they will fit in well and make a positive contribution. If you are considering offering a workshop placement, please contact us.
“During my time in the workshop with Adam (Winskill – Trustee) I assisted with a variety of tasks, including preparing scroll blocks, creating plaster casts, and the disassembly and restoration of instruments. This hands-on experience helped me develop my practical skills, build confidence in using specialist tools, and gain a better understanding of the level of precision and attention to detail required in this field. The placement also gave me a clearer picture of how a professional workshop operates and the standards expected in high-quality instrument work. Being able to observe and contribute to restoration projects was particularly valuable, as it deepened my appreciation for the technical aspects of the craft. Adam was kind and patient with me throughout the week and helped me out whenever I seemed lost or nervous about a task. Overall, the experience was both enjoyable and rewarding, and it has strengthened my interest in pursuing a career in restoration.” Miranda Bailey-Sharam – 2026
