Nina Poots

Newark School of Violin Making

Education Services Award 2021:

Nina was awarded funding for Herdim cello reamers and a cello peg shaper.

She wrote to the RAB Trustees to thank us for her award:

I am writing to express my gratitude for receiving the grant provided by the Education Services Trust. With this grant I was able to purchase the following five specialist tools:

  • Herdim Cello end pin reamer
  • Herdim Cello peg reamer
  • Herdim Cello peg shaper medium
  • Herdim Cello peg shaper large
  • Herdim Cello sound post setter

These tools will not just help me further my studies at the Newark School of Violin Making, but also my career as an instrument maker. I can set up my own hand-made instruments, and give future customers new set-ups on their existing instruments. Herdim is a quality brand and their tools last several lifetimes when looked after well, something I always do with my tools. I hope to help the next generation of makers, by looking well after my tools so they too can be gifted to students like me.

I have added a few pictures of the tools I received, the cello I just finished ‘in the white’, and a violin I have made during my third year at the NSVM.

Currently I am in the middle of the Final Major Project Realisation at NSVM and plan to move to Glasgow this summer to start my career as a maker. I have been incredibly lucky to have found many friends who make a variety of instruments in their shared workshop, and they have offered me a space to work there as well. This will mean the workshop will have a harp maker, a mandolin maker, a guitar maker and a violin maker all sharing ideas, concepts, materials and experience and is something I am looking forward to with great excitement! Several collaborative projects have already been planned for August 2021 and January 2022.

With my background as an art educator, I hope to develop this shared work environment to have an educational focus at some point in the near future. I desire very strongly to keep this wonderful craft of instrument making going and want to give back to the next generation. I would love to offer workshops to the public, bring several makers together for crazy musical instrument making projects, and offer work experiences to students.

Once again: thank you so much for granting me the award, and I am looking forward to collaborating with the RAB Trust as a maker in future.
