RAB Award 2023:
Though Peter is still in his foundation year he shows promise, and has requested a work placement. He was awarded work experience with Adam Winskill.
Peter writes this of his placement:
“During my workshop placement at Adam Winskill’s I got an introduction into violin repair and restoration. I learnt how to do various basic repairs such as opening up instruments in the least damaging way possible, repairing splintered and rough surfaces on gluing areas of plates and general instrument setup adjustment. I also got an understanding of the standard of work and accuracy that is expected at different types of workshops and how customer interactions and timescales play out.”
In 2024 Peter applied to the RAB Trust for expenses to go to Bilbao for a special workshop at the Basque School of Violin Making in May 2024.
It was run by Philip Ihle on ‘Considerations and techniques when making a replica violin’.
RAB Award 2024:
In addition to the award of expenses for his trip to Bilbao the Trust awarded Peter a short work placement.
Peter spent a day at Stephen Thomson‘s bow workshop learning the process of rehairing a bow.
“Spending the day at Stephen’s workshop was a colourful and educational experience. He ran me through a few bow rehairs and explained several different ways that he and other makers carry out each of the stages. I did an independent bow rehair in the afternoon after watching him do several in the morning. I had to ask for advice along the way, but I did the physical work myself. I was also shown some interesting bow repairs and Stephen ran through how they had been carried out, which has made me even more interested in this side of the business. I now want to keep on practicing bow rehairing in my own time to get better and better.”
