RAB Award 2022: Victor requested financial support for a head carving course, including funding for the tools he would need. The RAB Trust will provide funds for this. He has also been awarded a work placement.
Victor’s work experience with Jonathan Hill took place in July 2022. This is his write-up of the time he spent in Jonathan’s workshop.
I had just finished my 3 years in Newark the day before I turned up at Jonathan’s workshop. My ideas of violin making had been spun around during that time and I unfortunately
became somewhat cynical of the craft, feeling as though it had little respect for being different. However my first couple hours with Jono filled me with positivity.Jonathan is a true craftsperson who is devoted to his craft and to the music it will bring. Every day I was inspired, and felt very fortunate to learn and hear what Jonathan knew about his craft.
Under his teaching I helped create a 7 string viola d’amore.Once it was finished I then visited again to play it before it was sent across to the U.S.A. An experience I’ll never forget!
