RAB bequest lathe put to good use

January 20, 2022

In the autumn of 2020 the RAB Trust received a generous bequest from the estate of Jim Read https://rabtrust.org/jim-read-bequest/

One of the items was a Record DML 305 lathe complete with a number of turning tools. It went to Newark student Victor Camillieri, who with a friend made a new tool rest as the original was strangely missing.

They have subsequently put the lathe to excellent use, making pegs for their instruments using native woods, and designing and making their own cutting tools.

It’s great to see the pegs on one of Victor’s violas. For the RAB trustees, it’s thrilling to see that a student has been given the opportunity to own a lathe he probably couldn’t have accessed and that it’s given him the opportunity to achieve something he couldn’t otherwise have done.
