Ahead of our application deadline on 28th Feb, trustees Adam Winskill and Libby Summers paid a visit to the Newark School of Violin Making last month to talk to the students about what we are looking for in successful applications for awards.
The students were given advice on how to complete their applications, tips on taking good photographs of their work with a mobile phone camera and were reminded of exactly what the Trust can offer. We were delighted with the level of engagement of the students and took the opportunity to answer their many great questions and discuss the Trust’s work in detail.
This was also a chance for the Trust to hear from the students about their aspirations and needs, which will help to refine our offerings and better inform our work in the future.
Whilst the main aim of the visit was to help increase the quality and number of applications, the students also had the opportunity to study and handle some fine antique violins by Stradivari, Guarneri del Gesù, Guadagnini and Andrea Guarneri, which Adam had brought with the kind permission of their guardians.
The students clearly relished this opportunity to observe great examples of the Masters’ work in the school environment and much interesting discussion was prompted.
We are grateful to the teaching staff at the school for their help in arranging the visit and would like to thank the students, both for their enthusiasm and for their exemplary and respectful conduct when handling the instruments.
