Viola by Rowan Armour-Brown

July 1, 2018

Left to right: Judith Blackwell, Helen Michetschläger and Philip Ihle with the Rowan-Armour Brown viola

At our recent RAB Trustees meeting we were presented with a  jewel of a viola.

It has an interesting history. It was one of the last violas made by the namesake of our Trust, Rowan Armour-Brown. It was left finished ‘in the white’ at her death but not varnished. More than twenty years after her death, it was varnished and set up by her friend and colleague, Patrick Jowett, a luthier based in Nottingham. The varnishing is very faithful to Rowan’s style and the finished viola sounds warm, even and powerful.

The viola was presented to the RAB Trust by Rowan’s husband, fellow violin maker Paul Bowers so that it could be sold to add to our funds.

We are now offering this beautiful viola for sale at £12,000 via Sean Bishop in London.
